The supporting stars to your earrings - the earring backs : A guide

A pair of earrings has the power to impress and express emotions. This power comes from not only the design and aesthetics but also from the perfect fit. In order to have a perfect fit and experience when you wear them, one should look closely at the closures. Closures can make or break a beautiful pair of earrings.

Screw Back

This is the most secure type of earring back. It consists of a threaded post and a nut that is spun onto the post until the back of the ear lobe, thus it can’t be pulled off and has to be unscrewed. They are secure but more time consuming. Screw backs therefore tend to be a good option only for high value earrings.

Friction Earring Backs

This is the simplest and most common type of earring back (also known as “push backs”). It consists of a flat plate with a hole the size of the post. It slides onto the post and goes against the ear. It has scrolls of metal that curve up and press against the post with a light spring tension that holds the back in place. Friction backs are easy to pop on and off so are very convenient. They come in a variety of sizes, with the smaller ones being the most affordable type earring back.

Omega Clip

This is one of the most secure closures, and it is perfect for large earrings that weigh on the heavier side. It has a distinctive design, as it combines a smooth pin that goes through the earlobe while another presses with the earring.

Fish Hooks

The two main advantages of fish hooks are comfort and speed when putting them on. The drawback being if the closure is not secure there is a risk that the earring may slip off or get caught on something, like a scarf or the hair. Nonetheless, earrings with fish hooks look great with casual outfits.

This is a hook with a lock in the form of a small loop at the base of the earring which helps to keep the earring in place.

 Lever Back

These backs consist of a hinged post and metal catch that attach together, and the catch comes in various types. The catches on lever backs are usually made out of a lever and spring that clasp together to keep the earring on.

Saddle Backs

Saddlebacks are similar to latch backs and lever backs because they consist of a hinged post and metal catch that enclose them together, with the catch being available in various types. In saddlebacks, the catch is usually either U-shaped or loop-shaped, however. The hoop usually sits on the top part of the earring and fits inside of a small hole, which keeps the earring together.

Huggies Clasp

Huggies are a style of little hoop earrings that 'hug' the earlobe. This means they sit close to your earlobe! They tend to be thicker than the standard hoop and have a lever back, meaning the curved back of the earring simply clicks into place or fits into a U-shaped claw.
