m - How do you view the idea of “evolving” in your field? Can you share a moment or phase in your work that felt particularly transformative or beautiful?
S - I recently cried through an entire performance by Khasi folk blues singer Tipriti Kharbangar at the Friends of Oddbird theatre festival in New Delhi, a city in which I am often because we are building the Founder membership community for an upcoming Soho House there. It had been a dream of OddBird Theatre founder Shambhavi Singh to have 'Lil Mama Tips’ perform, especially in her rebirth as a solo artist. During the pandemic Tipriti broke out from her shackled role as the pretty-faced front woman of a famous band. With deep intention I connected these two very powerful women in the Soho House creative arts community and then witnessed them co-create magic. In these dark times there is a generation of spiritual warrior women being born. To completely absorb the vibrations of this fierce healing energy is just the privilege of a lifetime and has completely transformed my outlook on life.
m - What is that one piece of clothing or accessory that can instantly put you in a cheerful mood?
S - I suppose the handloom sari. It's an extremely transformative experience to wear. I’ve often wondered how a humble rectangle of fabric that, when draped just so, weaves a magic of elegance and beauty that makes the wearer feel supremely elevated, affecting their carriage and demeanour. The feel of handloom textile on the skin is also just gorgeous, like being draped in pure nature. I would recommend investing in the highest quality possible from Weavers Studio in Kolkata.
m - What draws you to fine jewelry? How does it bring you joy, any fond memories around jewelry that you cherish to date?
S - I’ve noticed that when I glance at the diamond ring my father bought his mother, who in turn bequeathed it to me, with his first big salary it reminds me that I come from a line of hardworking industrious people. Sindhi refugees, children of violence, pushed from our ancestral land, forced to make it all from scratch somewhere else. It makes me feel good. It makes me feel strong.
m - How did you feel when you wore Moi jewelry?
S - Each piece of jewellery is unique and carries a strong design signature. In that sense they are like people. Find a friend and you can wear that friend every day. They are so well priced you can have many of jewel friends! Moi jewellery is genuine, light and playful.
